Bison sculpture from the valley of the Merrimack River, near
  Lawrence, Massachusetts.  The style, and
occurrence in a region where megalithic chambers and dolmens occur, suggests
comparison with corresponding crude statues of bulls found in Spain and
  Portugal.  Especially in the regions
where Basque inscriptions, written in ancient syllabic script, occur.  Fell (1982) stated that Professor Santos
Junior has suggested that these statues imply a former religious veneration
  for certain animals.  (Photo Malcolm
